I got up and arrived 30 minutes early to work, like every other morning, only to find by 0800, I was the only one there. No patients listed on my schedule on the computer….and finally, it dawned on me that it was a Federal Holiday (Columbus day). Planted a smile on my face, came home and got some photo gear and headed to Ashland, WI for an oil change, then to Houghton Falls Nature Area for a roll of color with the Zero Image Pinhole. While there were a half dozen cars in the parking area, I had the places I chose to visit to myself, only passing others on the main trail. What a treat to have an unanticipated day off. Sat in the deer blind from 1530 until it was too dark to see through the scope, with no buck coming in. As always, a menagerie of crows, squirrels, rabbits, and other birds on the bait pile…each with their own inherent antics. I had a chipmunk climb under the side of the portable blind who was exceptionally surprised to see me, scurrying back as quickly as he appeared. A beautiful and crisp Fall day in the U.P. The forest here behind Houghton Falls looks like it should harbor hobbits or elves, but I left without a glimpse of either…..
“Through the forest have I gone.
But Athenian found I none,
On whose eyes I might approve
This flower's force in stirring love.”
― William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream
