“Absence diminishes small loves and increases great ones, as the wind blows out the candle and fans the bonfire.“~François VI de la Rochefoucault
A number of weeks of the deep freeze ahead for the Western Upper Peninsula. Photography will mean getting out the ice fishing bibs and layers of clothing. Also holding the breath while focusing on the ground glass, so as not to fog and instantly freeze it. Carrying gear via backpack and snowshoes helps warm you up, but when stopping and taking off mittens, sub-zero temps will get you moving.
Will be traveling to the Keweenaw Peninsula this weekend to give the new Intrepid 4x5 a trial run. Cannot think of another place, other than the Arctic Circle where the cold and snow can be so intense, being bordered by Lake Superior, the ultimate refrigerator and freezer. As my family migrated there from Montreal, Quebec in the 1890’s, it holds a deep spiritual connection for me. My daughter, who passed away in her early 20’s, was named after the small village they settled in-Laurium.
