Traveled downstate over the holiday and visited with my son and grandsons. Eric's grandmother has been placed in long term care due to her COPD so everyone visited and spent time with her. Visited some old photographic subjects while I was there, including Boot Lake Nature Preserve. I was a bit disappointed to see that across the last eight years I have been away, that the prairie has been taken over by big bluestem prairie grass, which is apparently very invasive. The result being that the great variety of wildflowers that were present, including tall compass plants were gone for the most part. Just one species of tall sunflower was blooming. I still have many fond memories of the place I will revisit. Left at 0400 on Monday and made it home by 1200, glad to be in the cooler and less humid weather of the U.P.. Eric will be here during the first week of October for Whitetail archery season, which he loves. Got to spend more time with his new wife, Genevieve, who is a lovely person and due to deliver a baby granddaughter on Thanksgiving.
“At the root of creativity is an impulse to understand, to make sense of random and often unrelated details. For me, photography provides an intersection of time, space, light, and emotional stance. One needs to be still enough, observant enough, and aware enough to recognize the life of the materials, to be able to ‘hear through the eyes.” – Paul Caponigro
Received a new Jazz CD today by Luciana Souza, vocalist extraordinaire. I was walking my three mile route last week and the album. All it took was hearing one cut and I ordered it pre-release. From her website:
he Book of Longing is Luciana's latest release on Sunnyside. Featuring Chico Pinheiro on guitar and Scott Colley on drums. Produced by Larry Klein, the album is Luciana's full return to poetry and words. This time, she has set to music four masterpieces by Leonard Cohen, one by Emily Dickinson, one by Edna St. Vincent Millay, and one by Christina Rossetti. Three are Luciana's poems. Chico Pinheiro (guitar) and Scott Colley (bass) create the environment for these beautiful songs. Luciana will tour this project in November and December.
