The last three winters, in addition to a ban on doe hunting, have had a very positive effect on Gogebic County whitetail deer. The DNR, in the opinion of most locals, made a huge mistake when they re-established the Gray Wolf population in the U.P., as it, in addition to the huge coyote population has very much impacted the population (especially in the spring when more than half of fawns born or predated by wolf and coyote packs. The whitetail is a very tough and resilient species. This time of the year I have to go out in the yard and spray all the ornamental and fruit tree branches as they are eating the buds. They got an apple in the backyard before I got spray and it will likely be lost. They are what locals call, yarding up from now until spring. Up at the top of the hill from Rauhallinen Farm will host anywhere from 40-75 deer bedding down in the pines on any given evening or morning. I just took out four trays of venison jerky from the dryer and it is yum. I like to use stew meat cuts as they make for bite size jerky.
