In the winter, I have found little less treacherous to stride on than pack ice on the big lake. Too jagged for snowshoes, walking requires ice cleats to maintain footing. You can work up quite a sweat in walking a few yards-getting nowhere fast. A wide angle fixed lens in the neighborhood of 24mm, or zoom like this Canon 17-24L (assuming you are using a full frame DSLR) work well in establishing the near/far relationship. On a 4x5 view camera, a 75mm is a good choice.
