Left late morning to the Bear Swamp to scout a deer slot for Eric. We had a pretty good idea where we wanted to be this year from the last. A jutting narrow peninsula on high ground bordered by deep swamp and pond on both sides. The deer have a trampled down path which would be evident to even the least woods savy. Brushed out the shooting lane for a 20 yard shot, put out corn and the game camera, then realized that I forgot the card for the camera.
Came back in the late afternoon with carrots and a salt lick and the card for the camera. By 1630, the woods, being so tight, was already becoming darker. Eric will have one of the swamps behind his shot, so the first light will illuminate his shot from behind, long before light hits the forest. At that time, you can look through the scope of the crossbow and distinguish the presence of antlers.
My hope is that when I return on Wednesday or Thursday after work to check the feed and camera, that one of those 300lb black fellows will not have devoured everything. Their presence and the darkness of the forest here makes for a truly spooky woods when coming and going by flashlight in the darkness. One of these evenings I will bring the pinhole to photograph the swamp on 4x5 and plan to sit like bear bait for 45 minutes, getting lost in my thoughts in this beautiful place.
As a sidenote, I am quite impressed with the quality of the camera on my new iphone 7 plus for taking basic snaps-seems every bit as good as my canon point and shoot. Hope your weekend was peaceful and fulfilling.
