While Fall technically does not arrive until the last week of this month, tonight Benny and I noticed a multitude of subtle discriminateve cues. Spring Creek is rising from the summer draught, the maples have some red as do the aspen have yellow beginning, There is an unmistakable change present. Fall has always presented me with gifts, unlike Spring which I have barely tolerated for its mud and lifeless drudgery. This week the temperatures will finally abate and I suspect by the weekend the pellet stove will be fired up at night. While Benny and I had time to finish our five mile fast walk this evening, it won't be long before a headlamp will be required to do so. When the time comes that it is dark when I leave for the clinic and dark upon arriving home at Rauhallinen Farm, then it will be time to rejoin Snap Fitness, which is next to my office for workouts in the winter (other than snowshoeing and cross-country skiing). I am glad not to have to do the indoor workouts all year, as they bore the shit out of me and the gym is full of narcissists.
We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person. ~W. Somerset Maugham
