Benny and I encountered this recalcitrant quilled critter while backpacking in the Trap hills the weekend before last. Mr. Porcupine was reluctant to give up the trail and we followed behind him for about 10 minutes. Each time we would get too close for his comfort, he would stop, turn around, and extend his quills, as if to say, "Come on, bring it on!" He finally moved off the south side of the North Country Trail and waddled away. Benny of course, was barking his ass off the whole time. Another reason to keep your dog on a leash while hiking in the Northwoods. A porcupine encounter can cost up to $400, due to anesthesia being required at the vet for quill removal by surgical pliers.
"She stole a piece of my heart but I couldn't ask for a better place I'd rather be imprisoned."
