Lake Superior is fabled to be recalcitrant about giving up her dead (The Edmund Fitzgerald and thousands of other shipwrecks), as the largest body of freshwater in the world, but she does discard other treasures for the taking. Benny and I often walk the shoreline here in Gogebic County at various locations, collecting oddities that suit my fancy for studio work, or just pleasure in observation.
My bluebirds from last year returned yesterday to the same nesting box, which they are known to do (as long as it was a safe and productive experience for them.) My fence keeps out the raccoons, which will raid the boxes to eat the eggs or young. Lots of male hummingbirds at the window feeder, often dive-bombing each other to assert their territorial machismo.
"O bliss of the collector, bliss of the man of leisure! Of no one has less been expected and no one has had a greater sense of well-being than...a collector. Ownership is the most intimate relationship one can have to objects. Not that they come alive in him; it is he who comes alive in them."
