It is a chilly Wednesday evening with below zero temps and a stiff wind. My son is about two hours from arrival, having left his lab at University of Michigan late morning. I will enjoy his company till noon on Sunday. The planned itinerary of his choice is cross country skiing, ice fishing on both Crooked Lake in the Sylvania Wilderness, as well as in Lake Superior (Chequamegon Bay, Ashland, WI). We will also travel to Cornucopia, WI to view the ice caves at the Apostle Islands, which opened a few days ago, due to the low temps making Superior safe enough . The first few days of opening drew crowds of up to 4000 per day. Last year, folks traveled internationally to witness the spectacle. It is difficult for me to be in such a large throng of people, but the rare opportunity to photograph this incredible landscape is well worth immersing in a sea of automatons marching in miles long lines across the ice like something from a George Romero flick.
