East Branch, Montreal River, Gogebic County, MI

When after a prolonged cold spell, the temperatures rise to the high twenties and low thirties (F), the faster rivers of the Northwoods will offer unique ice formations as a result of the union of running water and melting snow. Have not healed well enough to be in the car all day to do my annual Keweenaw Peninsula photographic trip, although the light is perfect today (slightly overcast). A shorter day trip to Bayfield, Washburn, and Cornucopia WI will be an adequate substitute. The Houghton Falls State Natural Area between Bayfield and Washburn offers a deep river gorge, snowshoe and hiking trail, and a splendid view of  Lake Superior at the conclusion of the trail. Snowshoes with crampons or boots with cleats are required to descend the gorge in the snow and ice. An additional treat for passing through Washburn is the opportunity to browse at my favorite used bookstore, Chaquamegon Book and Coffee Company
