I have been most fortunate this winter to have the Common Redpoll as a guest at the window feeders. Normally a resident of the Arctic, these hardy little fellows are capable of withstanding -65F. When food supplies dwindle in their native tundra, they migrate as far south as the U.P., in search of a regular food supply. With our winter being as harsh and long as it has been, they must feel quite at home here in the Western U.P. They have been particularly fond of thistle seed and are fueling up for their long migratory trip home to the Arctic. As you can see from the last snap, Benny is enjoying their company as well.
